Celtic’s International Brigade – the four Celts headed to Qatar

Celtic will have four representatives at the World Cup as Cameron Carter-Vickers was called up by the US Mens National Team. The Celtic defender will join Aaron Mooy, Daizen Maeda and Josip Juranovic on the world stage as they fly the flag for Scottish football.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is marred with controversy. The awarding of the competition was questionable to say the least, following on from Russia in 2018, FIFA have been embroiled in civil war relating to the awarding of these two tournaments to nations with unsavoury views on social issues.

However, following the completion of Saturdays game against Ross County, focus will shift to the World Cup. Whilst Celtic have friendlies in Australia, the spectacle will be too good to resist.

Carter-Vickers and the USMNT will face Wales, England and Iran, a group that is potentially favourable for the Americans. It also means that the ex-Spurs defender will face former teammate Harry Kane in the second match day.

Japan, who omitted Kyogo from their squad, will face Germany, Costa Rica and Spain. Daizen Maeda scored the winner in last night’s game against Motherwell, showing his killer instinct. Hopefully the World Cup will act as a catalyst for the player, meaning he will return in top form.

For Juranovic, his Croatia side will be dark horses again having reached the final in 2018. They face Morocco, Canada and Belgium. The Celtic fullback will likely fancy his sides chances of making the knockout stages.

Finally, Australia and Aaron Mooy face France, if Tunisia and Denmark. Bizarrely, former Celt Tom Rogic hasn’t made the squad. Mooy, however, will look to seize the opportunity of what is likely to be his final World Cup. The midfielder had impressed since being thrust into the first team, so much so that he has limited David Turnbull’s game time.

For Celtic, the advert of having some of their talents on display is obvious. Come to Celtic and you’ll get a platform to play European football, compete for trophies and get into the national team. Hopefully, our International Bhoys do themselves proud.
