Celtic’s Maryan Shved given a ‘Wake Up’ call by former national team boss

ANDRIJ SHEVCHENKO has decided against selecting Celtic’s new signing Maryan Shved for Ukraine’s Euro 2020 matches against Portugal and Luxembourg later this month and a former boss of their national side thinks he knows why.

The talented winger is back on loan at Karpaty Lviv after completing his move to Celtic in the January transfer window. He will see out the season at his old club and then will travel to Glasgow probably around the beginning of next month to join up with his new team-mates at Lennoxtown. Shved was in the news last week after scoring a memorable hat-trick but it seems that he is somewhat lacking in consistency.

Shved made his international debut for Ukraine against Turkey last November but he has not been included in Shevchenko’s squad for the Euro double header.

And a former Ukraine manager has told Shved that he will have to improve his consistency if he is going to break into the national side and be a success at Celtic. The warning came from Myron Markevych who reckons in this report that he’ll have to work on his game before heading to Glasgow.

Myron Markevych

“He has to be more consistent. He plays one game where he is really good and then you don’t see him for the next two matches.

“If he wants to play at the top level, he has to be more consistent. I never know what to expect from him.

“When he’s very good, he is unplayable. But sometimes he needs to wake up.

“He will show all the capabilities he has got and then disappear. Maryan is already a Celtic player and he had better learn quickly that in British football, you are expected to attack and especially defend in his position.

“He’s proved he has what it takes, but he needs to do more work on his game. Celtic are a big club and he will need to be at his best there all the time.”
