Celtic’s record signing – ‘£11m down the drain, Arne Engels scores again’

If you understand football then you will know Arne Engels a quality player. Those who criticised him failed to recognise that or simply don’t know what they are talking about…

Arne Engels, our club record signing had yet another splendid performance last night in the 6-0 route of Dundee, scoring two goals and providing a sublime assist for Daizen Maeda’s terrific goal, that must surely be a goal of the season contender.

Engels has nine goals and 10 assists in 33 games

Arne now has nine goals and 10 assists in 33 games so far, and is showing the potential and ability that persuaded Brendan Rodgers to spend a massive chunk of his summer budget to entice him to Glasgow.

The Belgium international midfielder was only 20 when he arrived at the club from Augsburg, but he already had bags of experience after registering more than 50 appearances in the Bundesliga.

Engels it’s reasonable to say, had a slow start at the club which is understandable due to his age, adapting to a new culture and style of football. His huge transfer fee wouldn’t have helped either. But he was far from ‘underperforming’ and a ‘waste of money’ as some of the more critical element of our support put it a few weeks back now.

However, with each passing game Arne has improved as he settled into his new environment and he has being producing a high level of performance on a consistent basis. He’s even made his mark at full international level with Belgium, and you don’t do that at a young age if you’re an average player.

Why Arne was ever doubted is a mystery. If you understand football then you can see that Arne is a quality player, those who are heavily critical of him just choose not to recognise that or they just don’t know what they were talking about.

  1. While Engels isn’t an £11M player, he isn’t £11M down the drain either. He is probably a £5M or £6M player.
He drifts in and out of games too much to be more than that.
