Celtic’s Treble, O’Riley’s ice cream, Abada’s double, Bhoys in Ibiza and the Oban Celt

Football, golf, shinty, reunions, weddings and some ice cream. It’s day two of the new Celtic Star Diary…

They knew they were leaving…

Hampden Goodbyes

A year ago today the Bhoys defeated Inverness Caley Thistle in the Scottish Cup Final to secure yet treble for Celtic. It turned out to be David Potter’s last game watching Celtic and it was also the last time I saw him.

David loved the Scottish Cup and was always thrilled to watch Celtic at Hampden. In the 2019 final against Hearts he found himself in beside the Green Brigade directly behind the goals at the Celtic end, and he loved every minute of it. If it’s going to be your last game then there’s probably no better way sign off than watching Celtic lift the Scottish Cup to complete a treble.

It was also the last game for Ange Postecoglou as Celtic manager and Jota as Celtic’s superstar from Portugal, both contributed so much to the Celtic cause in there short times at the club and it’s been mixed fortunes afterwards in England and Saudi Arabia respectively.

Matt – it’s melting in Denmark

Matt O’Riley might not be going to Euro 2024, unless there’s a late squad re-shuffle due to an injury, but he’s not letting that waste his summer break as he enjoys a rather large ice cream cone. It’s melting over in Denmark.

Former Bhoys Reunion

Liel Abada grabbed a double for Charlotte FC in an impress  3-2 win away to Atlanta United, which is of course where his former Celtic teammate Giorgos Giakoumakis currently plays. The Greek striker as we reported a few days ago is being liked with a $10m move to Mexico but he failed to find the back of the net at the weekend.

Abada had no such problems scoring twice in the second half the secure the points in this MLS match where he was named Man of the Match. Then the two former Celts posed for photographs as they swapped shirts. None will ever come close to matching the Hoops for either player. Watch Abada’s goals below.

Further south in the Americas

The @aboutceltic account has provided an Alexandro Bernabei loan update and it is not encouraging.  Since arriving on loan at Internacional Bernabei has featured just once in eleven matches. Celtic bought the Argentine in June 2022 from Lanus for around £3.75M and it looks likely that he’ll return to Lennoxtown later this year.

More Bhoys reunited

Joe Hart, David Turnbull and Alistair Johnston were all in Ibiza flast week for Greg Taylor’s wedding. Here’s a photo of the Bhoys enjoying their wee get together.

Congratulations to The Oban Celt

@celticcurio noticed something Celtic related in the golf coverage. He sent his congratulations to Oban Celt – Bob MacIntyre after winning his first PGA Tour title at the Canadian Open…

Yeah, okay it might be shinty related, but Oban Celtic play in the Hoops too so we’ve now got a team to support in another sport.
