Champions League boost for Celtic even if the season is declared null and void

We’re all still waiting for a major league to make an announcement on what they plan to do if the season can’t be played to a close.

It seems there’s still hope that things will be played out, and that may go for the European competitions too.

In theory they could be played after the season or even at the beginning of next season to find a winner, but a report from The Sun has revealed some good news for Scottish clubs regardless of what happens.

Celtic and the Rangers both reached the knockout stages of the Europa League, so it’s expected that Scotland’s co-efficient will receive a major boost.

The co-efficient moves in five year cycles, and Scotland had a particularly poor season five years ago when Inverness, St Johnstone and Aberdeen all failed to make any real progress in the competition, and Celtic lost their Champions League qualifier to Malmo.

The report states that the exploits this season should give Scotland an extra place in the Champions League from the 2021/2022 season.

Despite the ongoing shutdown due to the Coronavirus, it’s expected that results this season will still count and that means Scotland should receive the European boost, even if everything is declared null and void.

Unfortunately the league winners will still have to go through the qualifying rounds, but hopefully continued success should continue to benefit Celtic in the long run.
