Charlton now ready to sell Alfie Doughty, Celtic interested but Stoke City make first move

Stoke City have started the bidding for Charlton wing-back Alfie Doughty, who remains of interest to Celtic. Sky Sports Reporter Anthony Joseph has confirmed that Charlton have now received a bid from Stoke City for Doughty who is out of contract in the summer.

“Stoke City have made a bid for Charlton Athletic winger Alfie Doughty. They’re among a number of clubs interested in the player and speaking to Charlton about a move.

“The 21-year-old has not signed a new contract offered by the club and his current deal expires in July,” the Sky Sports man reports.

Asked if Celtic are still interested Joseph as usual gave a helpful update. “Still interested, yes. Not made a bid, though. Celtic would’ve preferred to maybe get him on a pre-contract. But Charlton look to be trying to cash in while they can and would prefer him to move for £1m+ now.”

Celtic made numerous bids over the summer but Charlton held firm hoping to convince the player to sign a new contract. They now appear to have given in to Doughty’s wishes to move on but Celtic now have competition form Michael O’Neill’s Stoke City and will now need to make a move if they are to get one of the main targets held over from the summer transfer window wish list.

“Why do celtic never just pay money asked for a player? £1m for a talented youth or £4m for Duffy in loan,” another Celtic supporter.
