Pre-season is all about getting players up to speed for the real matches. Any victory is nice of course but it means nothing at this stage, one only has to cast their mind back to 2009 for proof of that. It was then that Celtic defeated Al Ahly and Spurs to win the Wembley Cup ahead of those two clubs and Barcelona. Subsequently, the Bhoys went on to have a disastrous season and a 4-0 loss to St Mirren signaled the end for Tony Mowbray.
Celtic performed well in the opening two games with a mixed line up. The results don’t matter as Neil Lennon admitted when he expressed his joy at the way the players have played after so long out.
The Hoops drew 1-1 with Nice and then lost 2-1 to Lyon, whilst not playing against The Rangers. It was the youngest club in the pre-season competition, who lifted the trophy with a duo of wins against French opposition.
As ever, there was an over the top reaction online, with some counting it as a European trophy!
Chris Sutton was on the mark to bring some reality to the situation. He tweeted: “Can put that next to the Petroltank Cup.” The comment has gone down like a lead balloon at Ibrox…
