ONE supporter at the match last night, apparently sitting in row x, area 445 – that’s a fair bit away from the area of the park that young Calvin Miller occupied in the first half, tweeted at 8.17pm the following:
“Is it just me or is Calvin Miller so overweight and unfit a am looking from row x area 445 right enough”
One person liked his tweet and there were a few comments from his mates afterwards, with both Jack Hendry and Scotty Sinclair coming in for criticism. The guys in this conversation may well have all met after the game, got into the one car for the drive home.
Yet if you go onto News Now, there is a click bait site called Football Insider and they have published a story based own the conversation with this headline:
‘Brutal’, ‘Overweight’ – Celtic fans slam one player in draw v Kilmarnock
You will find this at the top of News Now Celtic’s Top Story section, meaning that more supporters have clicked on that Celtic story on News Now last night and this morning than on any other one.
If you have clicked on it you may have noticed that they have used a photograph of Celtic supporters, certainly not from Celtic Park last night or at all – it looks like from some summer pre-season friendly somewhere hot.
Calvin Miller was heavily involved in the action during the first half and pushed forward without losing the side’s shape. Scott Brown was patrolling nearby and giving out instructions and with Miller’s help, Scotty Sinclair started to get on the ball and gained in confidence.
All of Celtic’s attacking play came down that left hand side and Miller played in a much more advanced role than Jack Hendy at the other side, so a long way away from row x, area 445.
I was in the Standing Area for the night rather than my usual seat, so had a close up view of Calvin Miller. While it is fair to say that he is no Kieran Tierney as our left back, he performed well enough within the system that Celtic were playing and saw plenty of the ball. I said as much on The Celtic Star last night.
He certainly did not look overweight, but he did tire in the second half – he has had what two first team games this season?
Yesterday we looked at what Brendan Rodgers is planning to do during the summer and suggested that Miller might be heading to Perth to play for Tommy Wright’s St Johnstone side on loan next season – to get more first team experience in the position Brendan wants him to play.
That, incidentally is exactly what the manager did when he wanted to convert Kristoffer Ajer from a midfielder to a central defender and sent him to Kilmarnock to get the necessary first team experience in his new position.
Calvin Miller has been at Celtic a long time and has the potential to be a first team player. He was selected last night by Brendan Rodgers to play in the position that the manager reckons he can play in at the required level for Celtic. When Emilio Izaguirre left, somewhat to the annoyance of Brendan Rodgers, the boss didn’t go out to buy another left back. Rather he looked to develop Calvin Miller in that position.
So when the boy gets the chance to play, maybe we should be getting behind the manager’s decision and supporting the young player as he tries to make his way in the game?
Brendan Rodgers is never going to be sending out overweight footballers to play for Celtic. Whether you are in row x area 445 or click baiting like mad dear knows where, that is fact.
Why do Celtic supporters read that nonsense anyway? After any disappointing result these guys are searching through twitter to find two or three negative tweets to have a go at Celtic players.
Don’t give them the clicks.
