Daizen Maeda – Hoops hero to ‘worst Celtic player I think I’ve ever seen’

Daizen Maeda is proving his worth on the biggest stage of all in club football, the UEFA Champions League but not every Celtic supporter is as fan, so it seems…

Daizen Maeda admittedly can be a frustrating player at times. He’s got superb commitment and can score a fantastic goal out of the blue as he did last night, but sometimes he can leave you tearing your hair out. However  he’s a player we should cherish and feel lucky to have at our club.

That goal last night was his third in the biggest club competition in the world this campaign and he becomes the first Celtic player to achieve that since Moussa Dembele, and with a few game still to play, I wouldn’t put it past him adding to that tally.

Daizen is one of the first players on the team sheet for a reason. Yes he has wonderful energy and runs himself into the ground, but he’s also a very talented player. Yes, as I said, he can be frustrating at times, but he’s a player that most clubs, even at Champions League level, would feel privileged to have in their team.

Daizen Maeda is now showing that on the biggest stage of all, and to have scored three goals at this level is an testament to his ability, and for that he deserves great credit.

Daizen was named the Man of the Match last night by UEFA and Sandman also awarded him his very own MOTM award. That was met by this comment from a reader, by the name of Rabbie Burns:

Maeda was awful! Absolutely awful! What are you watchin? 90% of the time he just cuts back inside & plays the easy ball so we have to get it out to Kühn who actually attacks his defender nearly every time as he’s supposed to.

80% of the time he is hopeless as his crossing, passing & first touch are terrible. 20% of the time he surprises everyone and himself with a sclaffed goal like he did here. He slid & the ball hit off one foot onto the other .. are you all wilfully blind? He is an empty jersey, like Engels. We’re basically playin with 9 men, until the subs come on & we always play better .. big shock that, eh?

Worst Celtic player I think I’ve ever seen.

Some folk are never happy, although to be fair to Rabbie, insulting a player for scoring a goal is a new one on me. Or a new low. If he was having a rant about CCV’s own goal then perhaps you could understand that but point out how great that Cameron has been for Celtic.

But that own goal was overlooked and instead Daizen is the man taking the stick. Incredible really.

About Author

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

  1. Rabbie Burns taking poetic licence to a different level.
Footballers know you can please some people almost of the time But……
    Hail Hail.

  2. Daizen makes me think of an excited kid in Santa’s grotto. But I like him. He’s honest, runs and runs (and at CL level, that’s one factor that’s helped us this season, the speed of Kuhn and Maeda stop the Euro sides getting the upper hand). When he shoots, you’re half thinking, oh go in, don’t sclaff it wide or over. And half the time it goes in…….admittedly I’ve not watched enough of the Japan team but I’m guessing the coach also recognises, having a wide player who can dovetail in and create chances for better finishers is vital to win games

  3. As the great Jock Stein once said: “Celtic jerseys are not for second best , they don’t shrink to fit inferior players!”

But, nowadays Maeda is some sort of cult hero BECAUSE he’s so terrible & surprises us only when he does something good?
An dinnae get me started on the people who tug themselves aff over his “pressing” ability ..jeesus wept! Since when should a Celtic player be in the startin XI every week because of what he does WITHOOT the baw? The problems only start for him when he actually the baw! He hides, in plain sight every week. The runs he makes are usually so he doesnae get a pass as his confidence in himself is the same as what I have in him .. zero!
Are we no a big enough & good enough club that we can get a player who closes ppl doon AND actually has quality on the baw?? Like Jota, for example.
Standards have fairly dropped if that’s who we are noo!
“If Maeda was gid on the baw he’d be at Real Madrid” – another tired cliché/ excuse used by the brains like fitbaws crowd, as opposed tae those of us wi fitbaw brains!
His goal was a mis-kick! He hit it aff both feet as he slid .. look at how surprised he is it went in!
CCV 99% of the time is awesome! Deserves zero criticism fae me!
Maeda 99% of the time is awful! Deserves loads of criticism fae me!

    • “Ye see yon birkie ca’d a lord,
      Wha struts, an’ stares, an’ a’ that;
Tho’ hundreds worship at his word,
      He’s but a coof for a’ that. ”

      Writing about yerself, Rabbie?

      A coof indeed.

      • Seems ye dinnae even understand the meanin behind the lines.
It would be a mare apt description of yersel!
        Go away now!

  4. Rabbie is a sevconite. He’s just raging cos he knows his new team he started following in 2012 are gan bust like his old one. Big phil must stay.

    • Yer talkin mare nonsense than usual!
Just cos someone doesnae hae the same opinion as you doesnae mean thet support Them!
      Grow up!
