Taylor back to being whipping Bhoy but criticism is unfair

Yes, Greg Taylor was ineffectual last night but he wasn’t the only one and the stick he’s been receiving is totally unjustified…

Too many Celtic players underperformed in last night’s 1-1 draw with Club Brugge, including Greg Taylor who was totally exposed at the left back position and not for the first time in European football.

It was quite noticeable that Club Brugge had joy down the left flank especially in the first half, and that is mainly all down to Greg Taylor who looked totally out-of-sorts last night as Brugge exposed his frailties on more than a few occasions.

But while he deserves criticism like most of his teammates last night, some of the abuse he receives is totally unjustified. Greg Taylor has been something of a whipping boy during his time at the club, for whatever reason I don’t know, as in the whole he’s been a totally reliable player for us.

The former Kilmarnock left-back has played under Neil Lennon, Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers and every one of them has had complete faith in him as the amount of appearances he’s made will suggest.

Yes he may not be the best left back we’ve ever had, but he gives his all and he’s been a terrific servant to the club. He certainly doesn’t deserve the stick he receives from sections of the Celtic support.  Greg Taylor is entering into the last few months of his current contract and at the end of next month he will be free to speak to other clubs with a view to signing a pre-contract deal.

Brendan Rodgers has spoken about his desire to extend Greg’s stay at Celtic but to date both parties remain far apart in terms of the financial side of a new deal.

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

  1. Taylor invariably receives pass, stops, and passes straight back to same teammate who is now under real pressure from opponents who know one trick pony Taylor will be doing this. Now Trusty is getting g some unworthy stick because of this. He is bang average and Celtic is way above his level. A young Valle much more like it despite his inexperience and youth.

  2. Greg Taylor is good going forward in that inverted role as an additional attacking midfielder but for the life of me, I can’t understand why, when back defending, he’s been allowed to constantly back off his attacking opponent which usually results in a cross into our box or shot at goal – what are the coaches seeing here and why have they done sfa about it?

  3. I have always wanted Greg Taylor to come good, and in the inverted role he seemed to get there, and i couldn’t have been more pleased. But i’m afraid it’s nothing to do with looking for a whipping boy, he just isn’t up to that level of football, and no matter how much i wish he could be, after many chances ,he clearly isn’t

  4. Personally believe Taylor has lost the enthusiasm he once had playing for ourselves imo?
Wouldn’t ever question his professionalism whatsoever, but could this contract situation be having a massive effect upon him at present?
If we haven’t offered the sort of money, Taylor was potentially hoping for, then that must surely hurt him, after the years of service he has given to our club?
Somehow I would be surprised if that was to be the case?
So maybe Taylor does see his future elsewhere now, which again would also have an impact upon himself also imo?
Will be possibly January now, before things become clearer regarding what the future of Taylor will be?
Until then, I think Rodgers would be making a mistake with keeping Taylor as first choice in the LB position now imo?
Got no issues with Taylor as a player with ourselves, but as a choice for the LB position now, then valle would be getting the starting role hopefully?
Still remains as anyone’s guess as to what our LB options will be for next season at present?
