David Potter has some further reflections on last night at Paradise

Reluctant to let last night go, there are several points to ponder…

1. Clutching at Straws – One of the worst excuses of all time must be Neil McCann trying to say that the game should have been stopped before Celtic scored the first goal. Playing back the incident at real speed will show what an absurd suggestion that is!

Bobby Madden is not a totally deranged individual, nor was the stand side linesman, and they would have known that to chalk off that goal would have been totally indefensible. Shame on BBC for giving that suggestion house room, which the clinical Michael Stewart, no-body’s fool, shot down in flames! In any case, Neil, what is your excuse for the other two goals?

2. Ange Postecoglou – One’s admiration for the man increases by the day, not least when he said in a post-match interview that some people came to that game with problems in their lives, and how glad he was to give them something to be happy about.

Rarely, have I seen so many happy, smiling faces coming out of a football ground! If Celtic were founded in 1888 to put smiles on people’s faces in the face of poverty and even starvation, so too must they have a role in clearing up mental health problems caused in the wake of a pandemic.

3. The players – As they walked round the ground looking at the supporters and clapping them, did I detect a little wonder and awe in their faces. We had here highly paid professionals, multinational, multi-cultural and men like Joe Hart who has had all the experience at top level and International football that one could hope for?

Was there not a feeling there that he had never seen anything like this? Callum McGregor with the face mask, young Ben Doak, Reo Hatate who probably did not know a lot about Celtic a year ago, Liel Abada, Jota, Starvelt, Cameron-Vickers – none of them could believe that crowd! And that was a game shown all over the world. It must have impressed everyone.

4. And I hate to be a bore, but…. Sunday will see a much smaller crowd at Motherwell’s sloping Fir Park. We got three points last night. We now compete for another three points which are just as important. A fellow called Stein (I think his name was) once said that the points you get for beating St Johnstone and Partick Thistle are just as important as the points you get for beating Rangers.

The same man once overheard a player saying that on Saturday we were playing “just Falkirk”. The player, a famous one, was invited into the office to be given a blasting for disrespecting opponents. The moral is that now we are in the lead we must stay there.

Fourteen League games remain. We must win them all.

And now let us move on from the events of 2 February. Time to worry about Fir Park, Motherwell . 1.30 pm kick-off and on Sky TV, I understand, for those not lucky enough to have a ticket.
