Euro 2020 Connections: Celtic’s Only Austrian Bhoy

Following our recent Euro 2020 connections articles, tonight’s feature focuses on the Austrian link as they face the Netherlands in Group C of the tournament this evening.

Incredibly, only one Austrian has ever played for the Hoops and he represented the club very recently. Indeed, the player in question is none other than Moritz Bauer, who signed for Celtic on loan from Stoke City in the 2019/20 season.

Bauer arrived in Glasgow with high hopes and began life as a Celt in brilliant fashion, making his debut during Celtic’s 2-0 victory at Ibrox in September 2019. He came to Scotland with a good reputation and had reportedly been on Celtic’s radar for some time. However, the emergence of Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem El Hamed reduced Bauer’s playing time and he only went on to make a handful of appearances before returning to his parent club at the end of the season.

Despite a limited Celtic career, he was a positive figure who spoke well about the club and departed as a nine in a row league title winner.
