“Even in Edinburgh, no one’s had a bad word to say” about Ange Postecoglou, Hearts star reveals

It’s a rare sound indeed to hear songs of praise for Celtic emanating from Tynecastle. However, in Australian defender Cammy Devlin, Hearts have an Australian who finds it ‘insane’ that Ange Postecoglou is managing Celtic and admits the praise for Ange extends to Scotland’s capital.

To be fair there may have been a few amongst our own support who may have chosen insane to describe the appointment back in early June. Now though Ange Postecoglou is making his mark, the team are flying and the squad rebuild is beginning progressing well.

It’s also fair to assume therefore that Ange Postecoglou is a rather busy man, however in an interview with Vince Rugeri in the Sydney Morning Herald Devlin tells the story of an arm being placed around him post-match by the Celtic boss and him offering encouragement to the Hearts defender, this after Celtic defeated Hearts 1-0 at Celtic Park, with Devlin quoting Ange as saying “So good to see you doing so well, mate. There is another level in you. Keep working hard.”

“I was hoping I’d get the chance to say hello to him after the game,” the Hearts player said. “Although I was knackered and gutted about the loss, it was nice to meet him and hear him say that to me, someone who has done so much for Australian football. He’s coaching fricken Celtic, man. It’s insane.

The talk here, everyone likes him as well – even in Edinburgh, no one’s had a bad word to say. And everyone’s pretty opinionated over here.”

It’s absolutely no surprise to hear Ange Postecoglou took the time to seek out a fellow Australian and offer him some words of encouragement but it is a shock to hear the positivity shown to Postecoglou extends beyond Devlin and into the City of Edinburgh. I wonder if the goodwill extends to those in the Gorgie stands?

Now that would be insane!

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
