Ex-Celtic Striker Backed for Sensational International Recall

Tony Watt is being tipped for a sensational recall to Steve Clarke’s International side as a result of his move to Motherwell, according to former Scotland star James McFadden.

Watt, who scored one of the most iconic for Celtic in the last decade in the 2-1 win over Barcelona, joined Motherwell following a stint with CSKA Sofia and now McFadden is praising the attitude of Watt.

The 26-year-old has had nine clubs since leaving Celtic and has often been criticised for his attitude at times but McFadden told BBC Sportsound that he has the right mental approach to his Motherwell move to force his way back onto the International stage.

“I think Tony’s admitted that himself, at times his attitude could have been better.

“He’s spoken about trying to prove the doubters wrong. I spoke to him the summer before last and he was speaking about how he had to do things differently.

“He spoke about his move to Hearts and why he maybe made that move for the wrong reasons.”

“There are many things that can make a move not work out, but he’s come here and the manager won’t accept guys that won’t put it in in training or guys that don’t look hungry.

“He’s come in initially to train, whether injuries have forced their hand to bring him in or whether he’s looked really sharp, you don’t know.

“But I think he has made a change to his attitude and everybody wants to see him fulfil his potential.”

Stephen Robinson has been renowned in recent seasons for his work nurturing and bringing through young talents with Jake Hastie, David Turnbull and James Scott to name a few. Now, Watt will be hoping that he can use his opportunity at the ‘Well to fulfil the potential that we all saw in Watt as an 18 year old.

“He’s maybe chased the money or made moves for the wrong reasons but now he’s got the chance to come to a place that if he works hard, the fans will love him.”

“He’s got the chance to come here and potentially get a move off the back of it. It’s early, but if he shows that he’s hungry he could get a move or potentially force his way into the Scotland squad.

“It’s very early to be speaking about that but that’s got to be part of why he’s here. Maybe to stay long-term, maybe to get a move, but definitely to get into the Scotland squad.

“He’s not just coming to tick a box, he’s not like that. He trained at Aberdeen last season for months on end but they never offered him a deal.

“He is showing his attitude’s changed, he says all the right things, so if he works hard, he’s got a chance to show everybody how good he is.”

The change in Watt’s attitude could be key to him finding his form and forcing his way back into the reckoning as another potential striking option for Scotland in the future.

Watt was sold by Ronny Deila to Standard Liege for £1m after failing to impress the incoming Celtic boss but will hopefully be able to find his form with the ‘Well.
