Fabrizio Romano on Frimpong Windfall – Three top sides have consulted former Celt’s agent

One of the longest running transfer sagas of late has been the reportedly strong interest in former Celtic full-back Jeremie Frimpong. The ex-Manchester City academy star has been the subject of much attention since he carried his wonderful form and ability from Scotland to the Bundesliga and has been courted by the world’s elite.

Nothing concrete has come to pass so far, with Celtic’s supporters and heirarchy hoping for a big sale this summer from Bayer Leverkusen. The Hoops managed to make a cool £11.5 million on Frimpong when he was sold to the Bavarian giants back in the winter transfer window of 2021.

However, we did have to give his former employers at the Etihad a slice of the takings as they had smartly inserted a sell-on clause of their own into the deal that took the young Dutchman from the English side’s academy to the Scottish Premiership. The club still cleared around £8 million in the deal yet it’s these latest developments which could see the Parkhead outfit rake in even more cash if he moves on from Germany.

According to the transfer guru and knowledgeable expert about the internal machinations of the rumour mill, Fabrizio Romano, Frimpong’s agent has been in direct contact with three of European football’s elite clubs. He told our friends at Caught Offside: ‘formally he has not changed agent; his agent Lemmert has partnered with new agency to work together on Frimpong’s future.

“His agent met Bayern, Barcelona and Man Utd in April but nothing is advanced at this stage for the fullbacks market in general, same for Cancelo and Dumfries.”

He also told his substack column that it would eat a considerable amount Barcelona’s transfer budget this window if it were to go through. The journalist said of the fee: “I think asking price could be around £30/35m [€35-40m].”

With the Bhoys due a 30% share of the profit, the news that Frimpong’s agent has been in dialogue with the games elite is very promising. This is realistically the last chance the Bundesliga side have to get their hands on a very large amount of cash for Frimpong, otherwise they risk losing him for well-below market value.

Any potential windfall from this move could help fund Brendan Rodgers’ already bulky transfer kitty this window.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.

  1. Leverkusen is not in Bavaria. “Bayer” is their sponsor – the pharmaceutical company.
