Falkirk sign former Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths

When it comes to places where you can enjoy yourself, I’m not too sure Falkirk would top many people’s lists, and when it comes to enjoying your football, I’m far from certain the boondocks of Scottish football’s League One would top may player’s top destination requirements, but for former Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths it seems Falkirk and League one is exactly where he’s looking to get his mojo back.

Following his early release from his Celtic contract it was initially assumed Griffiths would sign a permanent deal with James McPake and Dundee, where he’d already spent half the season on loan, however, with no deal able to be agreed Griffiths has dropped down two divisions and announced today he’s joining Falkirk’s push for promotion.

Speaking to the Falkirk FC website Griffiths states –

“I’m really happy to be here. Martin and Kenny made it clear that they thought I could help them with the club’s promotion push. For me it’s about getting back enjoying football again and helping the team push up the league.”

There is no doubting Celtic and Leigh Griffiths parting was common sense for both parties, but it comes as a bit of a surprise to see the player drop to Scotland’s third tier and a predominately part-time footballing environment for the next chapter in his career.

Perhaps however at only 31 years of age, he’s hoping that level of football will be an environment where Griffiths can get his eye in again, bang in the goals and prove to suitors further up the divisions that he still has the goalscoring touch that has seen him average nearly a goal every two games throughout his career.

If so a short-term deal like this one may open up further opportunities in the Scottish Premiership next season. The gamble of course is if it doesn’t work out just where does Leigh Griffiths go next?

I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
