Former Celtic Chairman Jack McGinn has passed away at the age of 92. The club confirmed his passing in a statement on Wednesday, in which it was confirmed that Brendan Rodgers’ side would wear black armbands for this evening’s game at Pittodrie.
McGinn joined Celtic in 1965, coming from a newspaper background, to launch the club’s official publication, The Celtic View. He served as its first editor and remained a passionate supporter of the paper. In 1981, he became Celtic’s Commercial Manager and joined the board, rising to vice-chairman in 1985 and chairman in 1986. He led the club through the memorable Centenary season, when Celtic secured a league and cup double under manager Billy McNeill. After five years as chairman, he stayed on as a non-executive director until 1994. Beyond Celtic, McGinn held key roles within the Scottish Football Association, eventually serving as its chairman from 1997 to 2003. A lifelong Celtic fan, he remained a regular at Celtic Park in his later years.
It has been widely reported for some time that Jack’s grandson John was a supporter of the team and that his dream was to pull on the Hoops. It remains to be seen whether the Scotland Internationalist will make the move to Celtic.
Condolences to the McGinn family.
