From having no right backs to having the best three in Scotland

MIKAEL LUSTIG, Jeremy Toljan and Cristian Gamboa all left Celtic in the summer. Various targets came and went without much joy and it was becoming something of a crisis as the season got underway.

If you wait long enough for a Glasgow bus, two will invariably come along at once. Well that never happened as we waited for a decent right back. We didn’t get two we ended up signing THREE.

Elhamed looks reliable, a real defender and a player who can be relied upon. Bayer is a little more attack minded, he hasn’t had too many opportunities so far but has done enough to show he’s going to be more than decent in the Hoops.

Bauer made the cover of the programme but wasn’t selected

Then there is Jeremie Frimpong who was The Celtic Star’s Man of the Match on Saturday (the sponsors gave it to Edouard and in truth there were plenty of candidates). The former Manchester City development star was sensational at the start of that second half and the Ross County left back was destroyed on several occasions by the young talent who was loving every minute of it.

This tweet sums up the right back situation perfectly. “It’s mental how we’ve gone from having no right backs worth talking about to having the three best RB’s in Scotland.”

Neil Lennon today lavished praise on Celtic’s exciting new starlet Jeremie Frimpong after his impressive league debut on Saturday.

Speaking to Celtic TV, as mentioned in our last article, the manager spoke about how the Dutch youngster was acquired from Manchester City on deadline day in September. Neil Lennon confirmed that Frimpong had been on the club’s radar following a friendly match between the youth side earlier this year.

“It was only two or three months ago when Man City brought a development team up to play our development team, Jeremie was playing in the game. I was very impressed with what I saw. I spoke to Damien about him and John looked at the analysis and we were obviously impressed.

“We had Nick in the building – we were looking for a right back, we threw it to Nick and he had heard good things and seen him.

“All of a sudden an opportunity came up to do the deal. Peter was right at the forefront of the deal because Jerry would come under the bracket of emerging talent which is really important for the club.”

Frimpong was highly rated at Manchester City and left to further his chances and not end up on the Man City stockpile of Academy prospects that couldn’t make it at the English champions.

Lenny was full of praise for Frimpong, who made his first start versus Partick Thistle in the League Cup and impressed so much that he demoted Elhamed and Bauer to the bench on Saturday.

Elhamed was excellent on Beautiful Sunday

Frimpong was involved in the build up for a couple of the goals, Elyounoussi’s first and then James Forrest’s strike in the second half.

“So at 19, the money we’ve paid for him we have an outstanding talent on our hands and what you see on the pitch is what you see away from the pitch. This little energetic buzz bomb – he’s really proud to be there.

“His training levels before the Ross County game were outstanding, it made it impossible for me to leave him out the game.

Forrest and Frimpong terrorised Ross County Down that right wing

“We hope he will go onto be the player we think he can be.”

After being named Man of the Match in his debut, Frimpong was beaming with pride about the fact he’d joined the Champions and graced the Parkhead turf.
