Glasgow City 2 Celtic 1 – Alonso sees red as luckless Celtic lose despite dominating Champions

Celtic’s Champions League dream for next season ended this afternoon amid more terrible luck at Petershill Park this afternoon and it has to be said that the refereeing performance was as bad as you are likely to see anywhere this season.

That resulted in countless bookings for Celtic players with the Hoops Assistant Manager David Haley also getting a yellow card before Fran Alonso was shown a red card after the final whistle.

Celtic went into this match with third choice goalkeeper Anna Vincenti in goals and no substitute keeper available and an early injury saw the former Hibs and Partick Thistle keeper leave the pitch in tears in the early stages of the game with skipper Kelly Clark having to put on a short belonging to the injured Rachael Johnstone to take the gloves for Celtic.

The opening goal should never have been allowed to stand as Caitlin Hayes was clearly fouled by the burly City striker Ode Fulutudilu who acquires to Priscila Chinchilla for a tap in. Celtic lost a second goal seconds before the interval as Kelly Clark failed to judge the cross, giving Clare Shine the easiest of tasks to score into the wide open Celtic goal.

It was a scoreline Celtic did not deserve but the luck was clearly against Alonso and his team today. Still the second half started with a double substitution with Toland and Shen being replaced by Clarissa Larisey and Oli Chance as Celtic looked to find a way back into the match.

Alosno’s side dominated the second half and got one goal back after brilliant finish from Charlie Wellings from a decent cross from the hard working Tegan Bowie on the right hand side of the park.

Wellings had another effort which perhaps could have troubled Alexander with a better connection and late late substitute Gros rattled the City bar then had a great chance to score after fine work from the classy Larisey but the Icelandic teenager looked for another pass rather than blast the ball at goal.

After dominating the second half and being the best team in the first 45 minutes Fran Alonso was clearly frustrated as he asked the referee one or two pertinent questions at the final whistle. The card happy official merely smirked and produced a red card for the Celtic manager who has never seen so many of his players booked in a match.

Last time Celtic were here Chloe Craig was subjected to the worst tackle of the season in any league, in mens or women football – and that didn’t even earn the City player involved a yellow card. Today we had a card happy official happy to book Celtic players and officials and who clearly had a major say in the outcome of a game that Celtic deserved to win.

Here are our match notes…

5 mins – Chloe Warrington wins Celtic a free kick in position similar to cup final goal but wind plays its part and its a poor deliver from Tyler Toland and the early Celtic chance is lost.

7-12 mins – Anna Vincenti races out of her goal to beat City forward Priscila Chinchilla to the 50/50 ball but the Celtic goalkeeper is injured with another knee injury on this jinxed pitch. Celtic do NOT have a substitute goalkeeper as both Rachael Johnstone and Chloe Logan are out injured, Logan long term after injuring her knee here last month. A tearful Vincenti tries to play on but immediate goes back down and it looks like she can’t continue. Vincenti goes off, captain Kelly Clark puts on Rachael Johnstone’s shirt and is now in goals for Celtic. Tegan Bowie comes on as wingback with Chloe Craig going into a central defensive role.

19 mins – Heavy challenge by Fulton on Chloe Craig but advantage is played and Charlie Wellings gets the first shot on target of the afternoon from the edge of the area. It’s a comfortable save though for Lee Alexander in the Glasgow City goals.

25 mins – Chloe Warrington lucky to stay out of the referee’s book after tough challenge on Chinchilla, perhaps related to the late challenge on the injured Celtic keeper.

27 mins – Chinchilla opens the scoring for Glasgow City in controversial fashion. The referee fails to blow for a clear foul on Caitlin Hayes on the left hand side of the park by City centre forward Ode Fulutudilu who runs in on goal Kelly Clark is left helpless and as the ball is squared to Chinchilla and it’s a tap in for the Glasgow City forward. Fran Alonso is screaming at the referee, as is substitute Jodie Bartle but the controversial goal is allowed to stand and it’s 1-0 to Glasgow City.

30 mins – Alexander spills a Celtic free kick from Bowie, Charlie Wellings is quickest to reacted but her cut-back for Chloe Craig is intercepted at the expense of a corner to Celtic.

33 mins – Celtic Assistant manager David Haley is booked for continuing to complain about the opening goal while Sarah Harkes receives treatment for a grazed knee caused by sliding on the plastic pitch.

36 mins – Chloe Warrington picks up a yellow card for a foul too many. Amazing when you compare that nothing tackle to the nasty stamp a few moments later by Fulutudilu on Hayes’ foot, which could easily have been a red. No card shown yet again to Glasgow City players. Incredibly.

39 mins – Chloe Craig gets a warning for a trip on Dodds.

43 mins – Hayes is booked for holding her ground as Ode Fulutudilu, Clare Shine looks set to double City’s lead from the second ball as the free kick is thrown into the Celtic area but a brilliant last gasp tackle by Toland saves the day for Celtic.

45 +2 mins – Craig clears as Shine tries to go through on the Celtic goal after Harkes loses possession at the other end of the pitch as Celtic look for an equaliser before the half time whistle goes.

45 +5 mins – Jacynta gives away a stupid free kick in a dangerous position – given the goalkeeping situation and is pushed as Kelly Clark fails to read the flight of the ball allowing Clare Shine to easiest task of the day to double Glasgow City’s lead seconds before the half time whistle goes. Much more that City deserve in a first half where Celtic held their own but had zero luck.

Half time – Glasgow City 2 Celtic 0

45 mins – Oli Chance and Clarissa Larisey both coming on at the start of the second half with Shen and Toland and being replaced.

50 mins – Celtic pressing high up the park as Larisey bringing additional composure to the Celtic attack, Bowie delivers from the right but no takers and City clear the danger.

53 mins – Bowie tries to thread it through to Wellings but City continue to stand firm. Seconds later Jacynta has a shot that’s blocked as Celtic press City high up the park.

56 mins – Another Celtic attack comes to nothing as frustratingly Jacynta plays the wrong ball, much to the annoyance of the Celtic bench.

59 mins – Bowie handles just outside the Celtic box to give away another free kick in a dangerous position but this time Clark gathers comfortably.

60 mins – Hayes gifts Dodds with a shocking clearance but the City player is too surprised to take full advantage and Celtic survive the scare as the shot is dragged wide.

63 mins – Charlie Wellings gets on the end of a greatt Bowie cross to find the top corner with a superb finish to get Celtic back into the game as Celtic continue to press forward looking for a second goal. It’s now 2-1 to City and that’s Charlie Wellings 26 goal of the season. Celtic go close from the re-start as City hold on by their fingernails.

67 mins – Wellings booked for impeding the goalkeeper trying to clear. A free-kick is one thing for that but a yellow card is an astonishing call from today’s referee.

72 mins – City’s Clark has a fly slap at the back of the grounded Wellings head, with the referee in close attendance. Wellings is enraged at the this but there is no booking for th City player.

73 mins – Chloe Warrington gets to the byeline and delivers a decent cross but it’s gathered by Alexander in the Glasgow City goals.

73 mins – Lauder now has an effort for City from edge of box but the stand-in Celtic stand in keeper saves well.

74 mins – Celtic’s Clarissa Larisey is booked for a challenge. Remarkable really.

78 mins – Warrington takes a knee in the back of the thigh and goes off with a dead leg. No yellow shown incidentally. Irish winger Izzy Aitkinson comes on.

79 mins – Wellings gets in between the two City defenders and tries to lob Alexander but the ball drifts wide. On another day that’s a goal.

85 mins – Great reverse pass from Larisey but Alexander gathers just ahead of Wellings. Hayes is replaced by Gros as Celtic chase the game. Bowie wins Celtic a corner.

86 mins – Gros lobs the ball towards goal and rattles the City crossbar. It’s all Celtic in this second half but still the hoops trail 2-1.

88 mins – Dodds has a rare chance from edge of the area for City but blasts high over the bar.

89 mins – Larisey does brilliantly to get to the byeline and pulls ut back to Gros but the Icelandic teenager opts to pass rather than shoot with a real chance being missed. Put your laces through it!

90 mins – 3 minutes added, Celtic central defender Caitlin Hayes is named as the Player of the Game.

92 mins – Bowie overplays the pass for Larisey who pushes Alexander to concede the foul as the final chance is passed up.

93 mins – Final whistle goes and it’s a 2-1 win for Glasgow City despite Celtic having the best of the play in the first half and dominating the game after the interval. Celtic will now not be playing in the Champions League next season and will finish in third spot. True to form the referee reacts to Fran Alosno’s post match enquiry about the opening goal by showing The Celtic Manager a red card.

Celtic’ s Caitlin Hayes is named Player of the Match.
