Happy birthday to The Bunnet, Fergus McCann, the man who saved Celtic, surely it’s time to honour him at Celtic Park…

Fergus McCann is 84 today
Happy 84th birthday to Fergus McCann, the man who saved our football club in our darkest hour of need almost 31 years ago, and shaped us into the successful, well run club we are today.
The Bunnet was not everyone’s cup of tea during his five year stay rebuilding Celtic, but he did what he set out to do, something he was truthful about from day one, and he totally transformed our club on and off the park and our modern day success and standing in the game is in a massive part down to wee Fergus.

Along with several others he got rid of the Old Board who were sinking our beloved club. He made sure of our survival by stumping up his own hard earned cash and others like Irish billionaire Dermot Desmond were so impressed by Fergus that they too invested in the club.
Fergus dragged the club – screaming and shouting – into the modern era
Fergus dragged the club – screaming and shouting – into the modern era, transformed our stadium into the beautiful arena it is today, and gave us a team to be proud of on the park. His vision was there, believing that if he built a 60,000 stadium Celtic supporters would fill it. Few thought he was right and of course Ibrox only had around 44,000 seats at that time and still this day they are 10,000 below Celtic Park’s capacity – the strategic difference season on season that eventually destroyed that club.

Even years after his departure his legacy still lives on through our stability off the park in the way we are run. Indeed there are very few examples in football of a better run football business than Celtic.
Time to re-name The North Stand to honour Fergus McCann
We are in great debt to Fergus for his massive contributions to Celtic and that surely deserves to be honoured and celebrated. And what better way to do that than mark his legacy with a statue of The Bunnet himself or name the North Stand in his honour. That stand was like the Phoenix Rising, Celtic’s House of Steel. How could you ever beat The Jungle? Well only Fergus McCann had the answer. It is his stand and it should carry his name.

That sort of recognition is usually bestowed on players or managers, but Fergus McCann’s’ achievements are just as important to the club and that deserves to be recognised. Actually they are more important in so many ways.

Anyway, Many Happy Returns Fergus and thanks again for saving Celtic.

Good shout for naming the stand.
THE MAN who turned the club around.Took us out of the Jungle and 2nd class status.
Of course an element of supporters failed at the time to see what he was doing.
Needs tangible recognition while he is alive to receive it.
HAIL HAIL.
