‘Has Messi ever scored 8 goals in one game like the great Jimmy McGrory?’

“IF YOU KNOW YOUR HISTORY’…and Barcelona certain do. The runaway La Liga leaders have paid their superstar striker Leo Messi the ultimate compliment by comparing him to Celtic’s legendary goalscorer Jimmy McGrory.

Messi scored a hat-trick on Sunday to take his La Liga tally to 412 goals, scored over 15 remarkable years, thus surpassing Jimmy McGrory’s record in Scotland of 410 LEAGUE goals.

McGrory remains the all-time leading goalscorer having netted 538 goals in 534 appearances during his 15 year spell playing for the Hoops.

Messi’s hat-trick on Sunday sent Barcelona 10 points clear at the top on La Liga on the same day that the Odsonne Edouard (offside) goal at Dens Park gave Celtic their ten points advantage at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Barca said “They don’t make footballers like they used to.. they make them even better!” but The Shamrock hit back by asking the Catalan club if “Messi ever scored 8 goals in one game like the great McGrory in yon Spanish pub league?”

On the Sky commentary from Dens Park, Messi got a wee mention. Apparently he has scored more goals against Celtic this century than any other player, with Kenny Miller in second place!

A Messi and McGrory comparison is entirely appropriate but Messi and Misser! LOL…

Congratulations to Messi on his record, a remarkable footballer, a joy to watch.
