Ange Postecoglou poured cold water on the Alex Collado to Celtic links, despite contrary stories from national news outlets that the Hoops had been “snubbed”. He also revealed that at this current moment in time the club are looking to offload players and trim the fat from the wage bill as opposed to bringing more new faces in.
The boss remains eager to reinforce more competition for places throughout the team, but has been steadfast and resolute that we will not just sign players for the sake of having a big pool. Rather, Ange is looking at the market and waiting to see if anything too good to turn down arises in the next few weeks leading up to 1 September. And as we’ve seen in the past with Euorpean transfer windows in general, unexpected deals always come to the fore on Deadline Day.
“If I was going to speak about specific players, I’d be here all year,” he said to Sky Sports Scotland. “Whilst the window’s open, we’ve done most of our business. The stuff we needed to do, we’ve done, but we’ll stay active. There’s still the possibility of some guys moving out and we’re still keen to bring maybe one or two in, but it has to be the right ones. At the moment, we’re not in talks or negotiations with any players linked to us anyway. It’s not coming from us. But we’ll stay active for the next couple of weeks and see how things go.
When asked directly whether or not there had to be outgoings before anymore incomings, he replied: “Not necessarily. As I said, we’re in a position where we’re happy with the business we’ve done. It was important for us that we signed Jota and Cameron (Carter-Vickers) on a permanent basis. The players we’ve brought in have made our squad stronger so it’s about the right ones now. If they’re available, then we’ll move for them.”
Celtic may very well have interest in bucket loads of players, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we will be signing them. We have to cast the net far and wide to find those gems that not only fit the team football-wise, but moreso that they are the correct character profile for Angeball. Otherwise, that beautiful harmony can quickly turn sour with the wrong type of individual within the core group.
Firstly though, the decks must be cleared of the unrequired playing staff.
