‘I’m gonna break your legs’, Lee Naylor’s threat from Scott Brown on Celtic debut

Ex-Celtic fullback Lee Naylor has described how his debut at Celtic Park was almost interrupted by a threat from Scott Brown. The then Hibs midfielder was playing right midfield against Naylor and after the warmup, Brown made a threat against Naylor in a welcome to Scottish football.

Naylor was speaking to Si Ferry’s Open Goal podcast, which will be released on Monday, describing his career and now working as an agent. The Englishman signed for Gordon Strachan’s Celtic in 2006 for £600k.

“My first taste of Scottish football was against Browny.

“My first game was Hibs at home, he was playing right midfield and I was left back.

“This was my first meeting with Browny.

“I am walking out, we’ve done our warm ups and that and we are out for kick off.

“I am walking across the field and Browny comes running right next to me and says ‘I am going to break your legs’.

“He must have been what, about six years younger than me, he was 20 at the time, and I was like ‘Is this kid for real or what?’

Brown scored for Hibs after 8 minutes and was quick to let Naylor know that there was more to come.

“Obviously they went and scored, they went 1-0 up. He has come running up to me and said ‘I am going to be on you all game, you aren’t going to get anything, break you in two.’ I was thinking ‘oh my Lord what have I come to here’.

Celtic won 2-1 after second half goals from Vennegoor of Hesselink and Zurawski were enough to see off Tony Mowbray’s side.

“Aye he was good but we got the winner with me going on down the line.

“I said alright to him after that.”

Brown moved to Celtic the following summer and 13 years later has amassed an enormous amount of accolades and medals in his time at Celtic Park. Not bad for a £4.5m outlay. Brown has captained Celtic to a Treble Treble despite critics writing him off after Ronny Deila’s last year. Brown defied them and bounced back incredibly during Brendan Rodgers’ first season and would go on to captain Celtic’s Invincibles.
