In a Dermot Desmond v Peter Lawwell power struggle there will only be one winner

Those who oppose the mere mention of Brendan Rodgers have been very vocal with their opinions on the matter recently. Two of them made their feelings clearly known in their own different ways.

Firstly Neil Lennon’s pal Peter (McGuire) sorry Martin had a pop at Brendan’s supposed return to Celtic, wee Peter clearly isn’t a happy chappie, spewing his venom on twitter yesterday.

“Some people have short memories. Player revolt, tedious football, European humiliation and a man declaring his love while working his ticket out of the club,” Peter tweeted.

Secondly is Lawwell’s puppet on the CQN blog who also vented his feeling on the ‘noise’ surrounding the rumoured return of Rodgers. In their daily leader for the past two days we have had the following headlines…

Rodgers interview is just noise…

“Can everyone just calm their jets on the notion that Brendan Rodgers, or anyone else for that matter, is in prime position for the manager’s job?”…It’s well worth a read even just for the revisionism regarding Neil Lennon’s appointment in the Hampden showers in May 2019, remember Lawwell told us he had an unread file locked away in his drawer containing job applications.

“I know that in 2019 we didn’t as much appoint Neil Lennon as end up with him after an unfruitful search. So, if we’re reading the signs, there’s a chance we’ll end up with a breaker, not a builder. I’m reading the signs and I just can’t see Brendan Rodgers getting this gig. His interview is just noise, it’s not the sound you should be paying attention to.”

And this one today…

Away from pubic scrutiny

It’s worth reading just for the headline (the typo is theirs incidentally). So is all this just a coincidence? I’ll let you judge, but that CQN chap is a known follower of Peter Lawwell and will big him up at every turn of events, much like the succulent lamb lovers of yesteryear that followed orders to the letter from Sir David Murray.

Many of the Celtic supporters who read that site became so disillusioned that the formed their own forum over on Sentinel Celts because they saw straight through the Lawwell propaganda.

With CQN stating that Brendan’s return is just sheer fantasy, it indicates that Lawwell is against a return for Brendan and is pushing for the appointment of City Group coach Enzo Maresca, who of course will be familiar with Mark Lawwell, once of that parish.

Peter Lawwell is well known to have an excellent working relationship with the City Group over the years and that worked out brilliantly for Celtic in 2021 after preferred candidate Eddie Howe rejected the Celtic  job offer only for the Lawwell’s to recommend City Group J-League coach Ange Postecoglou for the job. Credit where it is due, that was inspired but Ange it has to be noted didn’t hang about as long as Brendan Rodgers did in the Celtic job.

After stepping down as CEO Peter Lawwell came back as Celtic Chairman but that is a vastly different role as the hands-on CEO job he had for many years. Michael Nicholson is the CEO these days and he should be making these calls, not the Chairman. There is no denying that Peter Lawwell does still have influence at the club but this should never include anything to do with the playing and coaching side as he’s thought to have had for many a year, and was certainly why Rodgers was ‘working his ticket’ back in season 2018/19.

Imagine if Ange had identified two players and was rejected by Michael Nicholson who basically said I know better and I’ve signed these two (duds) behind your back. Ange, who was working his ticket anyway, would have been off even sooner.

The Postecoglou-Nicholson relationship worked a treat while it lasted. The same was never the case with Rodgers and Lawwell, yet Brendan won 7/7 trophies while Ange won 5/6.

Put simply the current situation appears to be this. Dermot Desmond clearly wants Brendan back, and is trying his upmost to make that happen, arriving in Glasgow earlier today presumably for talks or a progress report at the very least. If Peter Lawwell is interfering and that’s a big if, then it doesn’t bode well.

The two barriers to Dermot Desmond getting his wish and Brendan Rodgers accepting the job seem to be will the support accept him and the disrespect that is coming his way from those who have a track record of doing Peter Lawwell’s bidding.

If the billionaire plans were frustrated by the supporters failure to forgive that would be one he’d have to take on the chin. However that is not the case with the majority of supporters now apparently supportive of a dramatic Rodgers return.

However if the Irish Billionaire doesn’t get his way and it’s down to the hostility towards the appointment from the Celtic Chairman than that is surely is untenable and Dermot Desmond is hardly likely to take that one on the chin. His counter-punch would be as vicious as it would be decisive.

In any collision between Peter Lawwell and Dermot Desmond there would only be one winner as Desmond as Celtic’s largest shareholder clearly holds all the aces.

Incidentally the modern Celtic fan media sites all have a relationship with the club but none have any behind the scenes secret arrangements with the CEO or anyone else at the club to do their bidding for them, as happened with some of the sites in the last generation of fan media and at least one is still at it yesterday and again today. Today’s fan media and the club have a much healthier situation and one that doesn’t take the Celtic support for mugs.
