International break has come at a good time for Celtic

This International break has come at a good time for Celtic and will do us the world of good...

The latest international break will give the players who are not away on international duty time to rest and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead when club football all kicks off again at a hostile environment with just over 500 Celtic supporters in attendance to back the team.

We face a tough trip to Tynecastle to play Hearts on Sunday 22 October and that’s followed by a vital home clash with Atletico Madrid at Celtic Park on Wednesday 25 October finished off with a tricky trip to Easter Road to play Hibs on Saturday 28 October. All three tough games in the space of seven days.

And if we can come thorough these matches with three victories we’ll be back in with a shout in the Champions League and will have been to Ibrox, Pittodrie, Livingston, Fir Park and the two Edinburgh grounds and won at them all in the first round of fixtures while establish at least a seven points advantage.

So Brendan Rodgers and the coaching staff will take this time to prepare for the challenge ahead and the short rest-bite will be beneficial for the players staying at Lennoxtown.

Players like Cameron Carter-Vickers and Nat Phillips will get more training practice after just returning from injury. Daizen Maeda who was left out of the Japan squad due to injury will also have time to recuperate. David Turnbull who sat in the stand at the weekend may be carrying a knock.

These games whilst not in any way will shape our season, they will be important all the same. Going to Edinburgh is tough most of the times, and travelling for back to back fixtures will be difficult.

The Atletico game is probably the most important as we need a result if we want to stay in contention of our goal of playing in Europe after Christmas.

It will be a tough seven days for Celtic , but one we will relish and thanks to the international break have time to prepare for.

This is what football is all about after all, three huge matches in seven days that can really shape our season. And while we wait for the action to get underway starting at Tynecastle, you are invited to join The Celtic Star at the Kerrydale on Thursday 19 October, with John Hartson and Stephen McManus as special guests celebrating the launch of Matt Corr’s new book ‘Majic, Stan and the King of Japan which covers Gordon Strachan’s first season as Celtic manager.

  1. It certainly was a huge boost to get such a commanding performance on Saturday, especially after the heartbreak a few days earlier.
We still have only played 11 competitive matches within in season, and within our consistency level of performance out of the 11 games, we have been a bit of hit and miss within them imo, but will accept they have been improving upon a regular basis lately.
Think the squad is getting up to pace nicely, and the real value of the squad will get tested after the international break.
Rodgers has a much better assessment of the squad now, and understanding of players roles within it also.
In turn the players are developing a much better understanding of what Rodgers is looking for also.
Like you say, 3 wins in 3 games makes for a very pleasing start to the season, 3 defeats then not so much.
Still plenty of work has to be done, and don’t see to many issues surrounding the squad to be able to match the demands of 3 wins in 3 games either, no matter how tough, as we are Celtic after all.
