Ireland under-21s head coach Jim Crawford on Bosun Lawal and his future

Republic of Ireland under-21s head coach Jim Crawford thinks that Bosun Lawal can step up and make himself a mainstay in Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side…

Speaking to the Irish Daily Star, Crawford said that the youngster has a “real presence on the pitch” and that he is a player who learns quickly.

He added: “He can pass a ball, be aggressive in there and he’s shown with Fleetwood on numerous occasions, he can score goals too. Where we’ve been playing him – centre-back – up until now, he’s been exceptional and I’ve had conversations with Darren O’Dea at Celtic and we share similar views on him, what he contributes to a team playing centre-back, with the game in front of him he’s exceptional.”

Crawford also revealed that he is excited at the prospect of Lawal being given a chance in the midfield.

“It’s going to be a really interesting season for him when he goes back to Celtic,” Crawford said. “I’m sure Brendan Rodgers will be interested in the boy’s qualities so I do think coming to this June camp will help him be ahead of the curve in fitness when he goes back to pre-season.”

The Irishman has had a good season whilst on loan at Fleetwood Town. He has featured in multiple positions, including in the midfield, and his good form is set to be recognised by the Celtic manager. Football Scotland recently reported that Lawal will be given a chance in the Celtic pre-season to see if he is ready to make the step up to regular first-team football. However, it is also rumoured that there are many English Championship sides ready to make a loan move for the promising player.

His solid campaign has also caught the eye of his national team, as he was called up for the Republic of Ireland’s senior squad for their games against Hungary and Portugal.
