“It shouldn’t have been a surprise to us,” Motherwell boss rues Hatate’s winner

Steven Hammell after the match gave his thoughts on yesterday’s clash with Celtic, which resulted in a 2-1 win for the Scottish Champions. The result takes Celtic back to the top of the league looking down on theRangers.

The Motherwell manager was frustrated with his players after highlighting the threat of Reo Hatate from the Celtic corner routine prior to the match. Hammell believes his players should have closed down the Japanese midfielder before he could get his shot away. Unfortunately for Motherwell the brilliance of Hatate shone through and gave Celtic the winning goal they certainly deserved against the time wasting Lanarkshire visitors.

As reported by the Glasgow times, Hammell rued the lack of marking at Celtic’s winner. “It’s something we’d highlighted. It’s a corner routine that they do – they’ll take two out and miss one and hit that space at the edge of the box. We’ve showed it – they’ve done it quickly, which we’ve showed, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to us.

“He’s got to score from 25 yards, which is difficult, but that’s the difference, the big moments in the game.

“We’re coming away disappointed. I feel frustrated a little bit. I felt especially in the latter part of the game we posed some threats there, but in the big moments and the fine details and the fine chances when you come to places like this need to be better. I feel that that was the difference.”

Hammell also gave his thoughts on McGregor’s tactical foul, which earned a red card, and spoiled a promising Motherwell attack. “It was a good red card from their point of view I feel, Ross Tierney is in for sure and Joe Hart was in a bit of a no man’s land.

“I feel like whenever we stretched them and pressed properly and got after the ball we caused them problems, but the plan was to come away from here with something and we’ve not, and that’s where the disappointment comes from.”

Hammell has a totally negative approach to football. No wonder Motherwell have few fans and most of the ones they do have feel that their team is rotten. I have a few friends who support them and their comments are extremely negative about the club, but very positive about ours. They made a big mistake in sacking the previous manager.
