Kenny Miller has dismissed Ange Postecoglou’s argument that Callum McGregor’s tactical foul was not a red card as Celtic had a covering defender in Stephen Welsh.. Late in the second half of yesterday’s match, the Celtic captain pulled back Motherwell’s Ross Tierney who looked like going one on one with Joe Hart had McGregor not intervened, but Welsh’s positioning needs to be considered.
Celtic eariler went ahead with a goal from Kyogo however, Celtic lost their lead to an own goal from Juranovic after a terrible mix-up with Joe Hart. A moment of brilliance from Reo Hatate restored the Celtic lead, it was a truly wonderful strike from outside the box.
With the threat of conceding a second due to a loose pass from the tiring Hatate, and with Joe Hart caught out of position, McGregor seemed to took one for the team and bringing Tierney down, and allowing referee John Beaton gleefully produce a red card for the Celtic captain, with no benefit of the doubt being shown given the cover being provided by Stephen Welsh.
Ange responded to the incident by saying that the tackle was unnecessary as there was a covering defender who would’ve seen off the threat. The Celtic manager told BBC Sportsound after the game: “From my angle I thought we had a covering player but the referee has made that decision,” Ange on the Callum McGregor sending off.”
Kenny Miller though, predictably believes this argument is invalid as the defender wasn’t close enough to have any bearing on the situation. Motherwell failed to capitalised from the freekick, which allowed the 10-man Celtic side to see off the game and take all three points.
Speaking on Sportscene, Miller said…
“If he doesn’t, then it’s a straightforward chip over because Joe Hart’s in no man’s land. There is a covering player, but he’s not getting there. No way. He [Tierney] can even take a touch towards Joe Hart and Welsh was never, ever going to get there, It’s the right decision because in the initial moment, it’s denying a goalscoring opportunity. No doubt about it.”
“It’s a clever one, because had he gone through, he’s one-on-one with Joe Hart and could be lifting it over the top of him or going round him and making it 2-2. It would have been an interesting last few minutes had it been that and a chance that Celtic could have dropped more points.”
“So it was a really, really clever foul. He’s had to take the punishment and they’ll have to do without their captain for the next game. But he could potentially have stopped them dropping points there.”
