“It’s the ideal job if you’re winning, not if you’re losing,” Lambert Warns Eddie Howe

Former club captain Paul Lambert reckons that Eddie Howe is a ‘good fit’ to be the Celtic manager but has warned the former Bournemouth boss that it only going to be his dream job if he realises that he needs to win, win and keep on winning regardless of whether he’s up against Brechin City or Barcelona.

“I think whoever goes in has a big job on their hands,” Lambert admitted to Sky Sports today. “It’s a fantastic football club, it’s worldwide, and they’ll need to thrive off the pressure that comes with that.

“If Eddie does get it I think he’ll be a good fit, but I think there’s loads of candidates out there who could take what is an incredible job. But you have to realise that you need to win every week regardless of whether it’s in Europe or in the league and cups. You have to win,” Lambert added.

“It won’t matter that he’s not a fan of the club. I think as long as the Celtic fans see the team winning that’s the most important thing. If those fans see you winning they don’t care where a player or manager comes from.

“For me if it is Eddie like everyone is saying, he has to realise he has to win, he can’t get away with draws, he’ll get given a year or two and no more to settle. But that’s the nature of the club and that’s what makes it special.

“People that have played there and managed I’m pretty sure will tell you the same – you have to win football matches. It’s the ideal job if you’re winning, not if you’re losing.

“It doesn’t matter if Barcelona came or Juventus, Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund came, the Celtic fans expect you to win. And that’s fair enough because that’s the history and tradition the club is built on.

“I think his pedigree gives him a chance. Eddie not being a fan won’t matter as long as he wins games.”

Lambert has always distanced himself from the Celtic job as he reckons NOT winning would affect his hitherto excellent relationship with the Celtic support. That sadly has been the recent painful experience suffered by Neil Lennon and hopefully the damage done to that relationship between the support and a club legend like Neil Lennon can begin to heal as time goes by and as a new manager comes in.
