On 18 January 1936, Celtic travelled to Albion Rovers on Scottish Division 1 duty. Victory put the Celts within a point Aberdeen in second place.
An ice cold wind blew across Cliftonhill, but Celtic’s star studded line up had no concern for the conditions as they swept aside their opponents by three goals to nil.
The famous players to don the hoops that afternoon were:
Kennaway, Hogg, Morrison, Geatons, Lyon, Paterson, Fagan, Buchan, McGrory, Crum, Murphy.
There was no scoring in the first half but seven minutes after the restart, 18-year-old outside right Willie Fagan scored the opener for Celtic. In the 73rd minute, James McGrory secured the second, and three minutes before the end Frank Murphy registered a third.
Murphy was Celtic’s best player on the day, whilst Gourlay gave a brilliant display in goal for Albion Rovers.
Celtic would eventually go on to win the league comfortably that season, their penultimate League trophy before the outbreak of WWII.
