On this day in 1963, Celtic met Raith Rovers at Ibrox in a semi-final of the Scottish Cup.
To be honest, everyone in the football community – players and managers from other clubs, fans, pressmen and the media – were all of the opinion that the team from Kirkcaldy had very little chance. And when Johnny Divers got the opener for Celtic in the 10th minutes, all these ‘experts’ were nodding their heads in an attitude of ‘I told you so’.
Raith, though, pulled one back in 16 minutes through McDonald and for the rest of the first-half, gave as good as they got and it was still 1-1 at the interval.
The game swayed in favour of Celtic in the 51st and 57th minute through penalties through Dunky MacKay; Raith pulled one back in 64 minutes but then Celtic sealed the match with further strikes by Stevie Chalmers and Frank Brogan to make the final score 5-2.
