John Hartson wants Steve Clarke as Celtic manager

John Hartson has said that he would like Steve Clarke to be the next manager of Celtic. The Scotland manager is one of the bookies favourites to become the next permanent manager following Neil Lennon’s exit from the club and Welshman Hartson reckons he would do a good job in the Celtic Park dugout.

The 57-year-old joined Scotland after a successful spell as manager of Kilmarnock but Hartson told Off the Ball that he would like to see Clarke bring his qualities into the Celtic role.

“Steve Clarke would be my number one to go to, if he was available, but obviously he is in charge of Scotland.

“He did a fantastic job at Kilmarnock, and has worked with the best in the past in terms of learning and picked up from the best. He’s got Scotland in the Euro’s and we will see how Scotland do there.

“He would be someone for me if I had the opportunity, and was picking a manager, I would pick someone like Steve Clarke.”

Clarke would be a solid if not unimaginative choice for the top job at Celtic, coupled with the vitriol from Rangers fans as he achieved success with Killie. Celtic have been linked with some big names, AVB, Rafa Benitez and Roberto Martinez but Eddie Howe appears to be the universal favourite for the job.

Roy Keane has apparently thrown his name into the hat but may represent an old school approach whilst Clarke would represent a more practical, if not conservative appointment. Celtic should be looking at bringing a player in to galvanise the team.
