Johnny Russell explains how Larsson’s genius made him become a footballer

JOHNNY RUSSELL has explained how watching Henrik Larsson made him want to become a footballer. The Sporting Kansas City attacker told the club’s official podcast that it was the super Swede that made him want to become a professional after his performance in the 6-2 win over Rangers at Celtic Park. The 30-year-old grew up a Celtic fan but never managed to get a move to Paradise.

“The reason I decided that this is what I want to do was seeing him.

“I always had an idea this is what I wanted to do but seeing him made me decide this is it.

“He is still to this day, my idol and my favourite player.”

Larsson scored twice as Martin O’Neill’s side to the sword; although it was his first goal that Russell points to as his favourite.

“It is my favourite goal of all time.

“He takes it from the half-way line, runs through, nutmegs one of their players and then the goalkeeper comes out to confront him and he chips him.

“That is my favourite goal that I have ever seen still to this day.

“I don’t think it will ever be beaten for me – especially the game that it was in against Rangers.”

The show’s host, Nate Bukaty, made Russell feel more at home as he wore a Celtic shirt as well as a number of the clubs scarves during the interview. The club’s commentator and has in recent time, stated his support for the club on social media.
