On This Day: Celtic draw in Prague to set up European Cup Final in Lisbon

THERE is not a lot of football being played right now across the world as Coronavirus takes hold – except Belarus, where vodka and saunas are meant to keep the virus at bay. However, thanks to @Lilze85 on Twitter, we can take a trip down memory lane and look at some of Celtic’s goals on this day.

1967 DUKLA PRAGUE 0 CELTIC 0

Celtic travelled behind the Iron Curtain to Prague with a 3-1 advantage from the first leg but knowing they would be under the cosh from the Czech side. Jock Stein released his lineup to the press before fielding a defensive XI tasked with taking Celtic to the European Final in Prague next month. The Czechs chased the game but Stein’s side were resilient. The afternoon kick-off finished 0-0 meaning Celtic would be travelling to Lisbon on May 25.

1987 – ST MIRREN 1 CELTIC 3

Brian McClair scored twice along with a goal from Mo Johnston Judas gave Celtic the win, although it wouldn’t matter much in terms of the league as Rangers still remained six points clear at the top of the league. Both strikers would shortly leave the club for Manchester United and Nantes respectively.

2004 – HEARTS 1 CELTIC 1

18-year-old Aiden McGeady made his debut at Tynecastle and scored for Martin O’Neill’s Celtic, one week after winning the league title. McGeady won a free kick and scored from it before De Vries equalised for Hearts 16 minutes from time. McGeady’s goal was Celtic’s 100th of the season.

2010 – DUNDEE UTD 0 CELTIC 2

Celtic beat Dundee United to guarantee second place in what was a disappointing season. Goals from loan signings Diomansy Kamara and Robbie Keane gave interim boss Neil Lennon the three points but it wasn’t enough as Rangers won at Easter Road to retain the title. Kamara scored after half an hour at Tannadice but it was end to end. David Goodwillie could have scored for United twice in the second half but Celtic held on. Robbie Keane put it beyond doubt with an injury time penalty.

INVINCIBLE by Matt Corr

The Celtic Star’s very own Matt Corr – who you may also know as a Tour Guide at Celtic Park – publishes his first Celtic book, titled INVINCIBLE – early next month. This beautiful hardback book will be the definitive story of Celtic’s magical2016-17 season – it truly is wonderful, a real joy to read, and brilliantly written by Matt.

If you have been reading Matt’s regular contributions on The Celtic Star or indeed in the Matchday Programme or in the Celtic View you will know just how talented a Celtic writer he is. The book is published by The Celtic Star and you can pre-order below.
