Jonathan Gould – From obscurity to glory in one year

Jonathan Gould went from obscurity to glory in one year…

Happy belated Birthday to former Celtic goalkeeper Jonathan Gould who turned 55 yesterday. Jonathan of course spent six seasons at the club and was a vital member of the 1998 championship winning side.

Jonathan was plucked from obscurity by Wim Jansen in the summer of 1997 and would go on to be part of one of Celtic’s most famous and important title wins.

Stuck in Bradford city’s reserves or join a club like Celtic? It was a no brainer for Jonathan in all truthfulness.

Jonathan quickly settled into life at Celtic and showed his quality with numerous good saves in important victories in a vital season. He would go on to win the league cup and the league championship in a historic season.

It wasn’t just club success he enjoyed, he topped off a remarkable season by being named in the Scotland squad for the World Cup finals in France.

It was something of a fairytale for Jonathan, he wouldn’t have expected such in his wildest dreams. Sure he won a few more honours in his time at the club, but that one season will be his most memorable, a truly wonderful turnaround.

Just an Ordinary Bhoy

About Author

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

  1. I thought big Gouldie was a safe pair of hands. Not flamboyant like some keepers, but he rarely let us down. I was not a happy bunny when MON punted him.

    Hail Hail.
