Jonjoe Kenny scores audacious penalty for Everton as Celtic chase replacement

Former Celtic loanee Jonjoe Kenny has scored a brilliant penalty for Everton overnight in a penalty shoot-out. The player left Celtic at the end of his short-term loan and the club are still to sign a replacement for either Kenny or Jeremie Frimpong with the new season just a matter of days away.

The right-back slot was one in which Celtic were desperately needing cover with Frimpong leaving for Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £11.5m. Kenny appeared to be an exciting prospect and the club faced competition from Burnley to bring the player in during the January window; however, he failed to live up to any hype and his performances versus Rangers proved that he was not good enough to be at Celtic. The Clarets were quoted £8m when they inquired about the former England U21 but he ended up at Celtic Park.

Kenny was part of a poor Celtic team but he will be hoping to make an impact under Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park this season. With a penalty like that, Kenny is showing a confidence that he didn’t have while he was at Celtic Park. In his time at the club, Kenny made 15 appearances and assisted 4 times.

Celtic are pursuing Aurelio Buta from Royal Antwerp but are yet to seal a deal for the Portuguese right-back. The Belgian club want €3.5m but Celtic are believed to have bid €2.5m for the player that has just one year remaining on his deal. This would represent the most likely option in the market as it stands with suggestions of Brandon Soppy from Rennes and George Baldock from Sheffield United seeming to calm down.

It has been plainly obvious since January that Celtic needed to sign a first team ready right-back with Frimpong headed for the door and again after Kenny’s performances for Celtic. However, one of the key positions is yet to be filled and Tony Ralston and Lee O’Connor remain as the only options for the time being.
