“Just one result away from things really blowing up,” Kris Commons

Kris Commons has stated that Celtic are so far ahead of our rivals theRangers at this minute in time, that even the players on our substitutes bench would get into the Ibrox starting line-up. The former Celtic man was writing in his Daily Mail column this week in the aftermath of our dominance over Mick Beale’s outfit in the Viaplay League Cup Final the Sunday before last.

After hammering the same side that Giovanni van Bronckhorst overseen back in September of this season, hopes had been raised when the 11-year-old club managed to grab a draw against the reigning Scottish Premiership Champions at home just after the New Year. However, the Hoops lost Greg Taylor that day and then shot themselves in the foot through a stupid error which galvanised a team that should have been put out their misery beforehand.

That result, in turn, led to a lot of white noise being aired before said Cup Final at Hampden Park a couple of weeks back, with Ange Postecoglou and his team treated with the utmost disrespect and contempt by a cocky rookie coach and his team of misfits. They aren’t laughing now mind you, as the Greek-Aussie and his chargehands dispensed of the motormouth and his players comfortably – regardless of the close scoreline in the end up.

Commons reckons that result – which has the Bhoys on course for another domestic clean sweep – could prove far too much for the Ibrox club if they have another poor result in the cinch Premiership league or Scottish Cup tournament. He said: “Even Celtic’s subs would walk into this Rangers team at the moment. The gulf in quality and depth between the two squads is massive. Postecoglou has built a ruthless machine at Celtic, one which is now relentlessly hunting down another league title. After the demolition in Paisley, Celtic have now scored 250 goals in just 99 games under the Australian.

“There’s some serious unrest at Ibrox at the moment. We’ve seen it with some of the banners unveiled by fans in recent weeks. They can see how far their club is behind Celtic on and off the pitch. Recruitment is key to success in modern football, but it’s an area where Rangers have faltered badly since winning the league. By and large, they’ve signed a load of dross whilst also allowing key players like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to run down their contracts.

He said: “Celtic’s stance on things like that is night and day. As soon as anyone shows any indication they won’t commit to a new deal, they’ll be out the door. Postecoglou is ruthless about it, as we’ve seen with Josip Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis. Rangers, on the other hand, allow players to dilly-dally. Given the unrest among supporters, it feels like Rangers are just one result away from things really blowing up. It’s impossible to avoid the feeling that the past week has really put into perspective just how far they are behind Celtic.”

With Celtic at home to Hearts tomorrow night, Mick Beale take a his side to their fierce foes in Leith. Hibernian are on a good run of form lately and Lee Johnson will be hoping they can turn up on the night against a Rangers side that are clearly struggling in front of goal at the moment. If they were to drop anything tomorrow evening, that could well make Commons’ words ring true and the show will be spectacular.

It’s all about standards, you know!

About Author

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
