Karamoke Dembele’s two key decisions

Karamoke Dembele looks to have a decision to make on not just his Celtic future, but also where he wishes to play his international football, with Football Scotland reporting Dembele is interesting Ivory Coast boss Patrice Beaumelle, ahead of upcoming fixtures this summer.

‘Football Scotland can reveal talks had been at an early stage until this week when he and his representatives met with Beaumelle and Les Éléphants FA personnel in London. It is understood Beaumelle would like to hand him a full cap in the summer during their next round of fixtures.’

Dembele’s future at Celtic remains unclear, with his contract expiring in the summer. Although it must be said Ange Postecoglou certainly seems to believe a place at Celtic is very much down to whether the player sees his own future at the club – and the Celtic boss seems to have a soft spot for the talented young winger, who at 19 years of age has a huge decision to make as to where he sees his club football future.

Now it appears Dembele, who has represented both England and Scotland at youth level – having been born in South London, before moving to Scotland as a child – has just as difficult a choice to make regarding his international future, qualifying as he does for the Ivory Coast through his parents, both of whom were born there.

Firstly however, it might be an idea for Dembele to get his head around his club future. After all, little more than a year ago, the top clubs in Europe were circling around Dembele, yet the choice of alternative destinations now would be somewhat less glamourous.

It really is time for Dembele, now recovered from injury, to focus on his football development, because at 19 years old you’d expect a talent who has been talked of in glowing terms since he was fifteen, to be a regular contributor at club level, and the fact he hasn’t been isn’t simply down to this season’s injury issues.

Perhaps now is the time to prioritise impressing Ange Postecoglou further still and sitting down with Celtic to discuss a new contract. Surely a destination for international football can wait for now.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
