Last Time in Aberdeen, First Half Blitz Blows Dons Away

Celtic prepare to travel up to Scotland’s North East today knowing that a win will take them 13 points clear at the top, with Rangers’ game being postponed until 3pm. Storm Dennis is expected to be in full flow, as if conditions in Aberdeen were ever easy, Neil Lennon’s team will face a stern test in any case.

The last time Celtic played at Pittodrie, a first half masterclass from Celtic completely blew the Dons away. An incredible Odsonne Edouard opener after ten minutes set the tone as the Scottish Champions put on a show in the October sunshine. He started the attack by coming short to take the ball, passing to James Forrest who gave him it back before running through two banks of Aberdeen players.

The second came from Fraser Forster’s pass out from the back, Jullien’s floated pass found the advancing Frimpong, who’s one-two resulted in the ball being scrambled over the line to make it 2-0 after 15 minutes.

Aberdeen managed to keep Celtic at bay until the 37th minute when a brilliant pass from Tom Rogic split the Dons defence to find Elyounoussi, who controlled and tee’d it up for James Forrest. It was 4-0 when Rogic found the forward run of Frimpong who cut it back to the big Australian after his initial cross was blocked, Rogic put the ball onto the chest of Moi Elyounoussi, who controlled it and fired it beyond Joe Lewis.

As Moi ran towards Rogic, he said ‘What a ball man!’ after the big Aussie had totally tormented Aberdeen all afternoon. The second half was another bombardment but Aberdeen held firm as Celtic, who had beaten Lazio days before, appeared content to tease their rivals.

The game was the day that Frimpong burst onto the scene and he hasn’t looked back, although he won’t make the trip today – we also saw the value that a fully fit Tom Rogic brings to the side. His quality in delivery and ability to carry the ball are truly on a different level to the majority in the league.

Hopefully more of the same today from the Champions!
