Legendary ex Arsenal striker linked to Celtic manager’s job

The hunt for a new manager has been going on for a few weeks now, so it’s led to a situation where most of the original names who were linked have now been ruled out.

It’s still not clear if Celtic know who they want and it’s just taking some time to sort out, but the silence will only lead to more links and the latest major name is Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

Obviously his record as a player completely speaks for itself, but he does have some managerial experience and it doesn’t really fill you with confidence.

He was beyond dreadful at Monaco where he only managed to win four of his twenty games with a very strong squad, while he was eventually sacked and replaced with Leandro Jardim – the man Henry had replaced just months before.

He also spent some time in MLS with Montreal Impact and there’s something impressive in the fact that he took them to the play-offs, but his win percentage was only 30% from 29 games so again it’s nothing that stands out as impressive.

The report linking Henry to the job seems to revolve around him saying he is available and looking for work, and he did say the following when he was asked about the prospect of replacing Neil Lennon:

“With all humility, whatever is going to come my way, I’m not saying that should come my way, but whatever comes my way I’m going to evaluate.

“I’m sure they’re going to work on what they’re going to work on. I don’t know what’s happening there, this is a club I respect a lot I’m sure like a lot of people in the world, but that I don’t know about.

“All I know is I want to coach and be back out there. You look at what Steve G done, and it’s just ridiculous. What a man. I knew he was going to deliver.

It’s not as if he’s publicly going all-out to link himself to the job so it’s tough to say that it’s likely that this will happen, while it would be such a huge risk to appoint him.

Of course he’s a huge name and his reputation and contacts could lead to some interesting signings, but that won’t mean anything if he’s just not a good manager.

It’s often said that great players struggle as managers because they just can’t grasp the fact that the players aren’t as good as they were, and that may be the biggest flaw that the Arsenal legend has.
