Lennon reveals disappointment at Leigh Griffiths’ fitness

Neil Lennon fears that Leigh Griffiths’ Celtic career may be over as the club ponder whether or not to offer him a year extension. The 30-year-old is currently working away ahead of the return to pre-season training with Celtic.

However, whether Griffiths will be offered a new deal remains to be seen. Former boss Lennon told the BBC that he thinks time is running out for the striker. Lennon said that he was disappointed with Griffiths’ condition at the start of last season but believes that he is a brilliant finisher.

“The disappointing thing for me was after lockdown he came back really out of condition, having come back into the team after being out for so long with his own issues.

“We got him fit, he was forming a really good partnership with Edouard. Griffiths is an incredible goalscorer. He’s the most gifted goalscorer Scotland have had for quite a while.

“He has to look at himself and get himself in the best condition. He’s only 30. He must have been sitting there yesterday thinking, ‘I should have been out there’.

“I don’t know if that ship has sailed now, I really don’t know. He has to get himself in the best condition possible and there’s no excuse not to these days. He’s a rascal.

“He’s a bit different and maybe that’s what separates him from that rest. But he didn’t do himself any favours this year, that’s for sure.”

Griffiths has been broadcasting that he is training as he looks to earn another shot at redemption at the club. In terms of options, the club may be tempted to offer him a deal on reduced terms due to the lack of options. Patryk Klimala has already left for New York Red Bulls while Odsonne Edouard creeps towards a transfer to Leicester City. Moi Elyounoussi, who occasionally was played up front, has returned to Southampton leaving just Albian Ajeti and Vakoun Issouf Bayo as the club’s only contracted options.
