Lenny’s Verdict? ‘It makes me very happy and very proud’

NEIL LENNON watched as his Celtic side turned on the style last night in the 5-0 home leg of the second round of Qualifiers for the Champions League against the shell-shocked Estonian Champions Nomme Kalju.

The new manager switched the formation of his side to allow both Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths to start and it proved to be a shrewd move from this Celtic manager who knows a thing or two about serving up Glory Nights in the Champions League for the Celtic support.

Afterwards Lenny admitted that he was thrilled by his side’s display and that he was delighted for Leigh Griffiths to get himself his first goal in competitive action since his enforced lay-off from the game.

“I’m delighted for him. He does what he does best. There is always that air of anticipation when he lines up a free kick because he’s got that range,” Lenny told the media as reported by Scottish Sun.

“You expect something to happen. I was disappointed with his first one but he’s won a medal with the second one. The reception he’s got from the players and supporters since he came back, it makes me very happy and very proud.

“He has got a huge lift from all of that. He needs to keep a level, he’s still got a bit of work to do in his conditioning. But that will do his confidence the world of good. You could see what it meant to him.

“It’s a brilliant performance. I can’t ask anymore from the players. To call it straightforward is a bit unflattering towards them.

“In the second half I thought we were very good. We took a little bit of time to get going but once we got the goal, we really upped the tempo of the game.

“It’s a clean sheet, five goals, so it puts a real marker down. But we are still a work in progress.”
