Lewis Morgan signs for New York Red Bulls, could Celtic profit?

Former Celtic winger Lewis Morgan has been signed by New York Red Bulls, which may have potentially landed a small sell-on fee to the Celts. After an impressive spell with Inter Miami, Morgan has swapped the Sunshine State for the Big Apple.

The deal is worth $1,200,000 with two payments being made of $700k and $500k over the next two years to secure the player. Inter Miami will also retain a sell-on clause so that if the Scottish winger moves on, they receive a slice of the fee.

Morgan departed in January 2020 and it’s likely that Celtic had a clause to benefit from future sales meaning that a percentage of the profit from the deal may be headed back to Glasgow. This has been standard practice in recent years with Celtic maximising earning from including these ‘sell-on’ clauses in their deals to sell players. Now, Morgan will link up with Patryk Klimala at the MLS outfit.

Signed by Brendan Rodgers in January 2018, Morgan was loaned back to St Mirren before a move to Sunderland and then finally merited some action under Neil Lennon. Morgan started the 2019 League Cup Final but was replaced by Odsonne Edouard – who won the free kick that resulted in Jullien’s goal.

He didn’t seem to be at the level required to make a lasting impact at Celtic but he seems to have taken well to life in the United States of America. His work rate was always an impressive feature and now he has earned a move to the New York Red Bulls, which will hopefully allow him to kick on.
