Liel’s late winner was vital in getting Celtic back on top

Three years ago today Celtic took on Dundee United at Celtic Park knowing that a win would close the gap between them and leaders theRangers after the Ibrox club dropped points earlier that afternoon…

Ange Postecoglou’s side had been trailing the Ibrox side most of the campaign, and indeed the club hadn’t solidified their place at the top of the table since before the pandemic, and it was something they were looking to rectify.

A win wouldn’t just haul the side within touching distance of the Ibrox club, it would give the players the opportunity to go top in the Glasgow Derby at Celtic Park which was to be played a few days later.

The game was a tense affair, with the supporters frustrated in the stands. And that vibe transferred to the players, with it reflecting on their performance as they struggled to make the break through against a Dundee United side mainly thanks to a certain Ben Siegrist who was outstanding, denying the Hoops with several great saves.

Things looked bleak as time ticked away, and it got even worse when Nir Bitton was ordered off ten minutes from time. Our chances of taking advantage of our rivals slip up was looking increasingly unlikely.

But you never rule a Celtic side out while there’s still time, and when it looked like we would slip up ourselves Liel Abada beat the impressive Siegrist as the clock showed ninety minutes. Bedlam, the players and the supporters celebrated in equal fashion.

The final whistle sounded a few minutes later and our dream of getting back where we belong was well and truly still alive. It wasn’t just a win, it was a terrific confidence booster going into the biggest game of our season.

Anyone remember how that one turned out?
