Liverpool’s Title = Celtic’s Title – Self-Isolating Steven Gerrard’s Champions Dilemma

Between a rock and a hard place comes to mind when you consider Steven Gerrard’s rather awkward predicament at present.

Gerrard may well be the manager of ’the’ Rangers but he’s also a bona fide legend in the eyes of his previous club – Is that now at risk somewhat?

Liverpool have won a phenomenal 18 league Championships. The first came in 1900-01, while the last title triumph came in 1989-90 under Kenny Dalglish. It has been a long old wait with many false dawns, now that elusive title is within touching distance.

Liverpool fans will take note of anything Gerrard says re Null and Voiding this season’s league campaigns.

As things stand, the team Steven Gerrard made 504 appearances for lie 25 points clear in the English Premier League, as they look to reach the holy grail of a league title that has escaped their clutches for 30 years. The last time they even got close to it a rather unfortunate slip by Captain Gerrard led to a Chelsea goal, and with it the last chance Steven Gerrard himself had to win Liverpool the title slipped away with it.

The Liverpool manager at that time was of course Brendan Rodgers, so you can surmise that had Gerrard not slipped this denying Liverpool the title, Rodgers would have been elevated to legendary status and would almost certainly never had arrived in Glasgow to win 7 consecutive trophies in a row, including two trebles.

It is fair to say then that the current football shutdown, due to coronavirus has come at an inopportune time for Stevie G. It may explain his silence on the whole matter. I wonder how that is going down with Liverpool supporters.

On one hand Steven Gerrard manages a ‘Rangers’ side lying a massive 13 points adrift of Celtic. Jim Traynor and his PR team would likely throw the manager under a bus, in a similar style to Stevie’s own approach to his playing staff since the winter break, should Gerrard publicly come out and say the league title should be awarded to Celtic.

On the other hand Liverpool supporters will be looking to club legends to stand up for their own and lay claim to a league title they have more than earned already. Awkward!

Kenny Dalglish – as covered earlier on The Celtic Star – has been telling everyone who will listen that Liverpool, quite rightly, should be crowned league champions if the Premier League is forced to end the season right now, he’s also extended that belief to both Celtic and Dundee United north of the border. A common sense approach.

Celebrating a title win early was a trend started by Steven Gerrard on 29 December 2019

Another club legend however has been conspicuous by his absence in that debate. That cannot be going down well with the rank and file support of Liverpool.

The short of it is Gerrard cannot come out – publicly at least – and say that Liverpool should be awarded the league title on shall we say, sporting integrity grounds – for wont of a better word – as that would immediately be jumped upon by a Celtic support, who may be tempted to point out that with Celtic 13 points clear in the Scottish Premiership, that same outcome should be afforded to the runaway leaders in the Scottish Premier League.

Under that scenario Gerrard can’t show his face in Glasgow under the fear of encountering the wrath of ‘the’ Rangers support, yet if he says Celtic shouldn’t be awarded the title and goes down the tiresome null and void route, then visits to Liverpool may not be as comfortable as previous sojourns to his hometown may have been.

Perhaps Steven Gerrard can extend his media silence to a period of self-isolation and hope when he re-appears from his bunker that somehow this rather awkward predicament has blown over.

Batten down the hatches and tie up the horses Stevie G, there’s a storm brewing out there. I hope you’re taking this opportunity to stock up on tinned goods and toilet rolls. You may have a bit of a wait to ride this one out.

Meanwhile the population of Rome, currently at home observing the coronavirus lockdown, appear to be thinking about Steven Gerrard too, judging by the song they appear to be singing here…

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
