Losing £42million in one week, Celtic’s modest spending under Rodgers

The force of Celtic’s fans’ growing frustration over a lack of investment in the club seems to be borne out by the very concerning net spend on players since Brendan Rodgers reign began at Parkhead more than two years ago.

According to reliable transfer figures based on incoming and outgoing players, Celtic have spent less than £20 million over the last 3 seasons since the Irishman was appointed in May 2016.

This is despite two seasons worth of Champions League income seeming to more than dwarf that sum, not to mention season ticket sales and two years’ worth of (admittedly uninspiring) treble winning prize money and television income.

Last season’s Champion League’s profit alone was reported as £28 million.
Add to that the £9 million sell-on profit made on Virgil Van Dyk in the most recent January transfer window, and with no expenditure on historic training ground costs or meaningful stadium renovation – other than the disco lights, the question remains for most of the Celtic fans:

Where has all that money gone?

Also last week we REJECTED a £9million bid for Boyata from Fulham before the English window closed. A second Fulham bid, if encouragement was given, could have reached £12million.

Then we threw away £30million last night in Athens against a team that were able to defend competently and simply focused on our defensive weaknesses when that attacked.

That’s £42million GONE.

That’s where we are this morning.

  1. Try 5 year contracts for Tierney, Forrest and Rogic, these wont have come cheap. Yet another example of the celtic support only focusing on rhe transfer spending rather than the bigger picture of financing these deals. It is slwsys better to give improved deals to those performing at the vlub rather than taking chances purchasing some unknown quantity.
