‘There were a lot of rumours that it would be from Celtic,’ McInnes

SCOTT McKENNA missed out on the chance of a move to Celtic this week after Aberdeen rejected a £3.5million offer for the defender and told the Champions that the player, who signed a five year contract at Pittodrie last season, won’t be sold in this window.

Celtic respected that position and ended their interest in the player, certainly for now.

Yesterday Derek McInnes spoke about the situation and how McKenna handled the interest from Celtic, and revealed that the player will be sold but in future but in the meantime will continue his development at Pittodrie.

“Scott is the real deal and he will go at some point as he will continue to get better,” McInnes said.

“He’s been kept abreast of everything this week and he’s fine with it and understands the situation.

“He’s got ambitions but his ambitions are with us at the minute and there will be a time when he goes to fulfil his next set of ambitions.

“But I wish there could be more like him as he is an absolute star of a boy as you couldn’t meet a better lad.

“He is someone who trusts me and he trusts the situation for his development and we will develop Scott and he will continue that with national team as well.”

McInnes wasn’t surprised that Celtic made a move for his star defender.

“We’d been anticipating an offer once the English market closed and there were a lot of rumours that it would be from Celtic.

“We had a conversation with them when the offer came in and it was rejected so we move on and it’s business as usual.

“It’s no surprise that people like my players and would be keen to work with them, especially someone like Scott.

“But he is still our player and we are keen to work with him ourselves as we haven’t had a full season with him in the first team yet.

“He has got more caps to earn and more to achieve with Aberdeen before he eventually goes as there is an inevitability about the fact that he will move.”
