Colin MacDonald of Peebles Rovers has come out and blamed Celtic for the SFA’s decision to suspend lower league football. East of Scotland Football League bemoans Celtic’s decision to go to Dubai as the reason for the Scottish Footballing Authorities to suspend games below the Championship as well as the Scottish Cup.
Speaking to The Southern Reporter, MacDonald claims that Celtic have to set an example and it was their decision to go to Dubai that resulted in the game going back into cold storage and not the rising infection rates in the country.
“We are in tier seven and the Scottish Government has decisions to make on information they get healthwise, but I think Celtic, based on the club they are, have a duty to set an example.
“Clubs in the top two flights receive much more than the lion’s share of funding and, as such, they have responsibility. I think it’s unfair that the lower leagues are penalised.”
Celtic have become a scapegoat for COVID-19 but the reality of the situation is that the club made a horrible mistake and it is the supporters that they have let down. Not any other team and not the Government or SFA, who both gave the decision the ok.
“To see people jetting off to the other side of the world is a bit of a sickener.
“It certainly hasn’t helped that one of our premier clubs has gone away and highlighted an issue we knew was there. Covid-19 is the enemy and that is what we are fighting. Football comes second to that.”
However, earlier today, Raith Rovers suffered a break out of COVID-19 in their squad. They are now considering whether they will be able to fulfil their fixture with Inverness CT at the weekend.
There have been a number of clubs suffering outbreaks, St Mirren, Hamilton and Killie as well as Dundee United spring to mind. Celtic have suffered just one positive case in their bubble – that of Christopher Jullien.
MacDonald is right that the Dubai-fiasco leaves a lot to be desired. However, with the idea that Celtic have single handedly brought about football being suspended below the Championship is fanciful.
