Maik Nawrocki is on the brink of a move to Celtic, and just what we need…
Celtic are close to the signing of polish centre back Maik Nawrocki for a fee of around £5 million. That’s a big price tag and he’s certainly not in the decent prospect category and will certainly be a first team contender.
Maik is tall, athletic and two footed, something we currently lack in our backline. He’s also a threat in the opposition penalty area, so he’s clearly a quality player.
With CCV currently out of action and doubtful for the start of the season, Maik will be thrown into the starting line up almost immediately, here’s hoping he’s up to the the job and settles in quickly.
He has the chance to showcase himself under Brendan and solidify a starting place. Carl Starfelt and CCV are the first picks currently and rightly so, but sterner competition will also do them the world of good.
The signing of Maik is a positive step and will give us much needed competition in the backline. Let’s hope this one gets over the line shortly.
Ahead of today’s match against Gamba Osaka which concludes the short tour of Japan, Brendan Rodgers was tight-lipped as you would expect about the imminent arrival of Maik Nawrocki, but did admit that an additional central defender is needed.
The Celtic manager said, as reported by Daily Record. “It’s one of the areas that I felt we could have greater depth in. We have some really good platers already here of course with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt who have been the regular two. Yuki Kobayashi hasn’t played so much but is also there.
“We also have Stephen Welsh who is a really committed player for the squad. He’s a really good lad and it’s been good to see him develop. But I feel we need another one.”
Fingers crossed that Brendan gets his wish for his first choice target which appears to be Maik Nawrocki.
