Dariusz Wdowczyk – The Celtic support called him Shuggie

Celtic are close to landing Polish defender Maik Nawrocki from Legia Warsaw with the player reportedly already in Glasgow to undergo a medical. The boy looks like a talent and hopefully he’s just as good as our last defensive capture from Legia, which was of course Josip Juranovic.

Once upon a time we signed a defender from Legia Warsaw, back in 1989, the one and only Dariusz Wdowczyk.

Daruisz was persuaded to join his fellow Pole and former Legia teammate Daruisz (Jacki) Dziekanowski in Glasgow by Billy McNeill and signed for a fee of £400,000 in November 1989.

Daruisz was a cultured left back comfortable with the ball at his feet and not afraid to play from the back. He was know for his pin point crossing with his cultured left foot. His football was based on the technical side of the game, a very much European style. Something that was alien in Scotland at that time.

Daruisz was an experienced player, playing regularly with Legia in European competition as well as picking up international experience with Poland who he represented at the 1986 World Cup, so Daruisz joined Celtic with a great pedigree.

Daruisz soon settled into life at Celtic and was nicknamed Shuggie by Tommy Burns. During his time at Celtic there were many ups and downs.

He of course missed a penalty in the dramatic shootout loss to Aberdeen in 1990. Fortunately for Daruisz, Anton Rogan is the one who is remembered most for missing the vital penalty. Although if Daruisz had scored Celtic would have won and Anton would have been spared any anguish. All ifs and buts I suppose.

About Author

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.
